CHARACTER INFO
❥ Name: Giyu Tomioka
❥ Canon: Kimetsu no Yaiba
❥ Canon Point: Chapter 131
❥ Age: 21
❥ God: Rawna

❥ History: WARNING: LINK CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE REST OF THE MANGA! The anime is only up to about chapter 52 at this point, so anything after the Rehabilitation Training arc is manga-only.
click here for your tragic backstory needs! His canon point is in the middle of the Pillar Training arc, before his sparring match with Sanemi Shinazugawa.

❥ Personality:
- Throughout the series Giyu is shown to look very stoic and unemotional, with the occasional angry outburst. Even when he’s pleased or offering encouragement, he rarely smiles. It has creeped out at least one of his coworkers, though... But it takes a very close friend or some very good food to get him to show any positive emotion.

- Not exactly soft-spoken, but he doesn’t speak often and struggles with his words because of it. At one point he says “I’m different from you guys” to the other Pillars, making some of them think he’s looking down on them, but in reality:

- Giyu definitely has an inferiority complex. He survived Final Selection after getting injured early on and being unconscious the whole week. Compounded with his friend Sabito dying while protecting other students from demons, he has internalized a lot of guilt over being the one to survive between them. He even tells Tanjiro that he’s MAD AT HIM for switching breath styles because Giyu wanted him to take his place.

- Among his colleagues and the general public, he sees himself as an outsider. He thinks he’s unfit to be in the Demon Slayer Corps and closes himself off to them - he and some of the other Pillars don’t get along. It may look like he thinks he’s better than everyone else, but really he just doesn’t feel like he deserves to be around. He likes being alone.

- In spite of his self-imposed failures he is very determined. Because Giyu feels like he really isn’t a Demon Slayer, he’s worked very hard to prove his worth to himself. It’s never been enough, as he still considers abandoning his post late into the series and downplays his accomplishments. Or, uh, maybe stubborn is the better word here. He once ignored Tanjiro for 4 (FOUR) days before finally giving up and responding to him. While Tanjiro was following him everywhere, constantly talking at him and asking questions. Giyu is entirely capable of making poor decisions and sticking to them for a very long time.

- To Giyu, signs of weakness (emotional and, to a lesser extent, physical) are aggravating. They remind him of the "worst" parts of himself (being "too weak" to save his sister or survive Final Selection on his own), so his reactions are unusually strong. In the beginning of the series he practically explodes at Tanjiro for being emotional and begging him to spare his sister, Nezuko. He even goes so far as to say that Tanjiro’s weakness killed his family, in some sort of very harsh attempt to force him to grow the resolve necessary to protect his sister, but after their fight his hostility is gone. Later on, he also gets pretty annoyed at Inosuke, who has pushed himself way past his limits and is knocking on death’s door. In spite of his condition (like, “head nearly got crushed into powder” condition) Inosuke approaches him with high energy and tries to challenge Giyu to a fight... So Giyu ties him up and leaves him hanging from a tree. He doesn’t hold much regard for people who are so willing to ignore their injuries or otherwise throw their lives away.

- He tries very hard to keep up a cold, distant image but he has a heart, unfortunately. Giyu is... Actually very sentimental. He still remembers the names of other Demon Slayers who took the Final Selection Exam at the same time as him, much to their surprise. His clothing probably displays this the best - his haori is sewn together from two different ones belonging to Sabito and his sister, someone else who died to protect him. He looks mad all the time and on the surface really appears to not care about anything said to him, but he’s a big softie underneath his icy exterior.

- He only opens up to a select few, but he’s a loyal (if socially awkward) friend if someone manages to get through to him or otherwise impresses him. After their fight, Giyu sends a letter to his teacher pleading him to take Tanjiro under his wing. Yes, maybe at first he only saw a potential successor in Tanjiro, but over time Giyu winds up sticking his neck out for him a lot over the course of the series. Distracting colleagues so that Tanjiro can land a hit on them, physically restraining a fellow Demon Slayer to protect Nezuko from harm, agreeing to end his own life if Nezuko were to ever harm a human... It’s a list. A whole list from this dude who can barely be in the same room with his colleagues.

- It may look and feel like he doesn’t care what other people think about him, but he actually does care about other people’s opinion of him at least a little. No other jabs from people, playful or otherwise, seem to affect him very much, and in the clip linked above it appears to shock both Shinobu and Tanjiro when Giyu reacts to her saying that people don't like him. What… What do you mean people don’t like him? So really, half the time he has no idea that the things he says could come across as antagonistic when he’s accidentally starting arguments with the other Pillars.

❥ Abilities:
- All Demon Slayers study a specialized breathing technique that enhances their physical capabilities. From an outside standpoint, Total Concentration Breathing makes them appear to have enhanced strength, speed, and reflexes. Giyu and other Pillars are able to maintain this breathing technique at all times, but if the breathing pattern is somehow broken or impeded their abilities are, as well.

- Giyu uses the Water Breathing Style, and is the combat style’s representative (Water Pillar) in the Demon Slayer Corps.

❥ Extras:
- As of right now because of his canon point, he has not and cannot unlock a Demon Slayer Mark, so I’ve omitted it from his abilities. He’s aware of their existence and the conditions that make them appear, but at this point he doesn't have one. If there is a future canon update, the abilities tied to his Mark will be greatly diminished.

- Giyu will be bringing along his Demon Slayer Corps uniform, Nichirin blade, and a crow that has been trained to relay orders. Kanzaburo is very old for a bird, though, so he makes mistakes often and makes Giyu nervous.
